1.  Generic Name or Active Ingredient:

     Podophyllum

 

2.  Uses:

To remove warts.

 

3.  How This Medicine Works:

Podophyllum is a keratolytic agent, which removes skin cells to clear up warts.

 

4.  Do Not Use This Medicine:

  • If you are allergic to podophyllum or any other ingredient in its formulation.
  • To treat warts on the face or mucous membranes, bleeding warts, moles, birthmarks, or warts with hair growing on them.
  • On children aged less than 12 years.
  • If you are taking steroid treatment.
 

5.  Before You Start To Use This Medicine:

  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are allergic to any other drugs.
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you have poor circulation, for example diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, or any other health problems.
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are or plan to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
 

6.    Using With Other Medication:

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medication, vitamins, herbal preparations, or supplements, as they may interfere with this medicine.
 

7.    How To Use This Medicine:

Follow the directions on your medication label carefully, and ask your pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. (National Call Centre)

a)    How to apply

                  i.    The solution should only be applied by a doctor.

                ii.    First, the affected area will be cleansed thoroughly. The surrounding healthy skin may be protected with petroleum jelly (vaseline).

               iii.    The podophyllum should be applied carefully and sparingly to the wart using the applicator provided.

               iv.    Your doctor will inform you how long the solution should be left on to dry.

                v.    After the treatment, thoroughly remove the dried medication with soap and water, or alcohol.

 

b)   When to apply

Follow the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.

 

c)    How long to apply

Repeated applications may be required to completely remove the wart.

 

d)   If you forget to apply it

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to apply the medicine. Do not double the dose.

 

8.  While Using This Medicine:

 

a)    Things you should do:

  • Tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist that you are using podophyllum.
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medication at the same time
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you develop any allergic reactions
  • Seek medical advice if your symptoms persist.
 

b)   Things you must NOT do:

  • Do not swallow or inhale the medicine.
  • Do not apply the medication near your eyes, nose, mouth or injured skin areas. If it gets into your eyes, immediately flush the eyes with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
  • Do not share your medication with anyone, as warts can be contagious through skin contact.
 

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

 

9.  Side Effects:

All medicines may have some unwanted side effects. Sometimes they are serious, but most of the time they are not. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any side effects which are severe or persistant.

 
      Possible side effects:
  • Burning sensation on skin
  • Itching
  • Pain at the application site
  • Superficial skin ulcers
 

10. Storage and disposal:

  • Store at room temperature and in a dry place.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date has passed.
  • Return any unused or expired medication to the nearest pharmacy.
