Self Medication Guide For Common Illnesses

Read this leaflet carefully before taking your medicine. Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have any further questions about your medicine.

1.    Generic name or active ingredient :

      Chlorhexidine hydrochloride

 2.    Uses :

Available as a solution to clean and treat wounds or burns.

3.    How This Medicine Works :  

Rapid bactericidal action and has a persistent antimicrobial effect against a wide range or microorganisms.

4.    Do Not Use This Medicine If :

  • If you are allergic to chlorhexidine or any of the other contents of the product.
  • Your burn wound is on a hairy area. 

5.    Before You Start To Use This Medicine  :

  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you have any other allergies.
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are or plan to get to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Consult a doctor before using this medicine in children.
  • Avoid cemented glass components. 

6.    Using With Other Medication  :

Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are taking any other medication, supplements, vitamins, or herbal preparations as some medicines can interfere with each other.

7.    How to use this medicine :

Follow the directions on your medication label carefully, and ask your   pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. (DIS link)

a)   How to use :

         i.    Thoroughly rinse the area to be cleansed with water.

         ii.    Apply the minimum amount necessary to cover the skin or wound area.

          iii.    Wash gently, then rinse again thoroughly. 

b) When to use:
  • As advised by your pharmacist or doctor. 

c)    How long to use :

  • As advised by your pharmacist or doctor. 

d)   If you forget to use it :

      Use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine. Do not double the dose.

8.   While Using This Medicine :

a)   Things you should do :   
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if there you have any allergic reactions to the medication.
b) Things you must NOT do :
  • Keep the solution out of your eyes, ears and mouth.
  • Do not to apply to hairy areas.
  • Do not share your medication with other people.
 In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

9.    Possible side effects :

      All medicines may have some unwanted side effects. Sometimes they are serious, but most of time they are not. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you have any side effects which are severe or persistant.

      Possible side efects are:
  • Irritation of the skin
  • Redness of the skin
  • Rashes
  • Other skin reactions (e.g contact dermatitis)
10.Storage & disposal :
  • Store at room temperature and in a dry place.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date has passed.
  • Return any unused or expired medication to the nearest pharmacy.
